About

Therapy with Charles Murray

Portrait of Charles Murray

Hello, and welcome.

I’m a psychotherapist and counsellor, and I work online with individuals, offering both short-term and longer-term therapy depending on what feels right for you. I’ve been working and studying in mental health since 2013, so I bring a good deal of experience to our work together.

I’m trained in two approaches: existential and psychodynamic therapy.

  • Existential therapy starts from the questions that don’t have tidy answers — meaning, freedom, isolation, mortality, choice — and asks how you are living in relation to them, right now, rather than trying to fix or diagnose you out of them.
  • Psychodynamic therapy looks at how your past — early relationships, repeated patterns, things half-remembered or never quite said — shows up in your present life, often without you noticing.

Put simply: one asks what does this mean for how I live, the other asks where has this come from. I find people rarely need just one.

I’m a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Alongside my private practice, I work at Islington Mind, where I run several different groups — including a men’s group, a young people’s group, a Living Well group, a Hearing Voices group, and a low mood group.

What I hope to offer you, above all, is a steady, warm relationship where we can gently explore whatever feels difficult or unclear in your life — without rushing you toward easy answers before you’re ready for them.

How I work

A reflective, relational, existential approach.

Depth

We can explore not only what is happening, but what it means: the patterns, tensions, losses, longings, and questions beneath the surface.

Presence

The work is attentive and collaborative. I listen for words, feeling, silence, body, atmosphere, and the relational field between us.

Clarity

Therapy can help make experience more thinkable and speakable, so that what once felt vague, overwhelming, or fixed begins to take form.

Areas

What I can help with

Anxiety Depression Relationship difficulties Identity concerns Low self-worth Loss and transition Isolation Questions of meaning Emotional stuckness
For the parts of life that are difficult to name.
